Mr. McPhillips has lived in Hastings for over 30 years and married Laural Benner, a lifelong resident of Barry County. Together, they raised three boys, who are successful in their own right. Mr. McPhillips is devoted to his family and his community.
He is a past board member of the YMCA, having served two terms in that capacity, a former member of the board of directors of the Hastings Education Enrichment Foundation, a founding member, and the first president of South-Central Michigan Youth Baseball. He is also a former officer (Treasurer) of the Debtors Bar of West Michigan.

Mr. McPhillips' areas of expertise include Elder Law, Family Law, Criminal Law, Bankruptcy, Real Estate and Estate Planning. He recently was honored for the Distinguished College Award in 2019 from the Debtors Bar of West Michigan.

Mr. McPhillips enjoys spending time with his family in Northern Michigan, particularly Mackinac Island. He also enjoys horseback riding with his wife, bicycling, vegetable gardening, tending to his apple orchard and spending Saturdays in the fall watching University of Michigan football.
